Today I headed towards Dothan, Alabama about 100 miles away. I decided on this route after talking with my friends at Pro Cycle & Triathalon Shop. The hills were starting to flatten out, however the temperature was steadily rising. I decided to stop at about 70 miles and rehydrate.
When I stopped at a small convenience store in rural Florida, I was approached by three young women in their late 20s. They asked me where I was going and what I was doing it for. They all then disclosed to me their history with drug addiction and it was obvious they were under the influence of something. I told them my story briefly and my plans to start grad school in the upcoming weeks. They asked to take a photo with me and I obliged, and gave them my number and card and told them to call if they were interested in getting help. One of the girls disclosed to me that her mother had been in recovery for 20 years before passing away, and she insisted that I have a glass bead that enclosed a 4 leaf clover given by her mother. I was touched by this momento and attached it to my keychain.
I continued to pedal north for another 30 miles or so grateful for the life I live so freely.
