This morning I was to ride from Savannah to West Ashley which was right outside of Charleston. I had ridden from Statesboro the previous day with a strong tailwind making it in record timing. I also had the pleasure of being accompanied for some of the way by Don Borowski whom is the manager of SwimBikeRun, the shop that had sponsored me for the ride!
I left Savannah early and was looking forward to having some more people join me for the second half of the ride in South Carolina. Mike Bannister, who helped sponsor the Ride, and a few of his cycling buddies that happened to both be sober, rode out to meet me and ride into West Ashley up Highway 17. I was relieved to have some company as it made the ride safer to be more visible. The road wasn’t exactly “cycling friendly” as there was no shoulder and all three of them got flat tires! I held up the rear of our pack and watched my rearview mirror closely to insure that drivers passed around us with the safe distance- which is 3 feet according to the law.
We arrived safe and sound and I was happy that one of my best friends, Bret from Statesboro, was staying with me at the hotel. We were going to ride in together the following day to Sullivan's Island and I was happy to be able to finish with him. Bret had overcome some of the same struggles I had with addiction and also was in recovery from cancer which he had gotten while getting sober. The way he walked through that and stayed sober and with a positive attitude is something that I have always been amazed by. He is truly a remarkable guy and was s grateful for him to ride to finish with me!
