All of the proceeds from the ride will be donated to the Center for Addiction Recovery.
A bicycle trip across the country comes with many hazards, some not foreseeable. To help mitigate some of the potential danger, and to provide some companionship along the way, John "Unk" Unkel will be following Steve, and updating us on their journey.
Originally from Bridgeport, Connecticut, and a graduate of Sacred Heart College in Fairfield, Connecticut, Unk is retired from East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro after 10 years in the position Director of Materials Management, the same position he held for 25 years with the Baptist Medical Centers in Birmingham, Alabama.
Unk is active in recovery, working with others on a daily basis. He also works with the Boys and Girls Club of Bulloch County, and is starting a program to teach preschool children to read.
He lives with a dog and cat in Statesboro, and is looking forward to this opportunity to travel in retirement, and support Steve in his efforts on the ride.
